Cedarville University SIFE | The Rock
The Rock is an Afterschool program located in Springfield whose goal is to mentor, guide, and lead the troubled children of the city into successful careers. CU SIFE partners with The Rock by regularly attending these sessions and teaching topics that will give these kids skills as they enter into a competitive workforce. Time Commitment: 2 hours each month
2010: This year CU SIFE has once again been able to continue the Rock project. We have been able to visit several times in the Fall and look forward to continuing this project in the spring. 2009: CU SIFE has come alongside The Rock and monthly sends a group of 12-15 SIFE students to the center to help with their endeavors. The SIFE team has presented ethics cases and interviewing skills to the kids. When the SIFE team presented on ethics, they utilized interactive skits to demonstrate proper and improper methods of dealing with certain situations. In addition, when the team spoke on interviewing skills, several members acted out several interview scenarios and challenged the kids to discover what was done incorrectly. This program has been a huge success for both the kids and The Rock directors. As one SIFE member stated, “The positive effect the SIFE members are having on these kids cannot be measured with mere tests results. The skills we teach them will benefit the kids for a lifetime!” 2008: A team led by sophomore Emily Simmons met with “The Rock” teenagers twice this year, meeting at both Cedarville’s campus and the facility in Springfield, to bring lessons covering opening a savings account, setting short term and long term goals, and how to begin looking into post-high school opportunities. The sessions also covered some business ethics topics. Over 20 teenagers were impacted by this project. |
